LAHORE: The government has devised a plan to end the ongoing constitutional crisis in the province and would likely notify Governor Punjab Baligh-ur-Rehman before May 31.
As per sources close to the government, the federation has concluded consultations with the legal experts in this regard.
Notably, President Dr Arif Alvi had rejected the prime minister’s advice on the appointment of the Governor.
After the rejection by the president, the federal government may fill the slot at any time, the legal panel advised.
The legal practitioners opined that the government has the authority to appoint the Governor immediately.
The sources have revealed that the government would likely issue the notification for Baligh-ur-Rehman as Punjab Governor anytime soon.
The name would be notified after the final approval of the Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the Punjab cabinet would be formed after the appointment on the slot, the source added.
It was also disclosed that an immediate oath would be administered by the cabinet that will end the political crisis prevailing in the province.
Notably, the matter of appointment of the provincial governors in the country remained indecipherable as the tension stays high between President Dr Arif Alvi and the federal government.
The slot of Governor Punjab fell vacant as the federal government removed Omar Safrfraz Cheema from his office and nominated Baligh-ur-Rehman for the post.
The crisis in the province intensified as Punjab Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, who was to take charge as acting governor until the oath of Rehman, refused to take over.
On the other hand, PM suggested the name of Baligh-ur-Rehman for the office but President Alvi rejected the advice.
